David R Coté – Artist
Artist’s Statement:
When I am shaded by hemlocks,
and light dapples the forest floor – brush to oils
When I am still, and surrounded by grass,
or water, rocks, or trees – brush to board
When I hear the wind, squint from the sun,
beg for time and light to stand still – brush to oils
Even when I am forced to create indoors
and can only rely on their memories – brush to board
The colors, the patterns, the connectivity
– brush to oils, brush to board, brush to oils, brush to board.

About the artist:
Inspired by shadows, light, and subtlety in color in nature, I look for ways to express the most in the simplest way.
I’m happiest when I can get outside to paint en plein air, though more often I’m painting in my home studio when the weather or my schedule doesn’t cooperate. After four decades of creating in acrylic paint, I found myself craving more depth and richness in my colors, which led me to pick up oil paints in 2018. I fell in love with the new challenges and opportunities they offer. Today, I enjoy a balance of both but rely on acrylics when I’m traveling long distances and chasing the light. Although I’ve taken a few classes and connected with other artists along the way, I am primarily self-taught.
Beyond the easel, in 1989, I studied as a photographer under my father, Ray. From 2000 until its closing in 2018, I ran the family studio, Coté Photography. Along the way, I earned a degree in digital media with a concentration in graphic design in 2015. Since then, I’ve spent my time in the nonprofit world helping people navigate recovery, using both traditional support systems and the power of art to build meaningful community connections.
On a personal note, Terry and I were married in 1993, and our daughter, Delia, was born in 2002. Whether I’m painting or working in the community, I’m driven by the belief that creativity is a vital tool for connection and healing.”
